For 20 years, Silver City Brewery has been making batches of great craft beer – and attracting some serious accolades along the way. We had a chat with them to find out all about it, and to ask what’s in a name.
How did Silver City begin?
Silver City was started in 1996 by co-owners Steve and Scott Houmes, and it remains a locally owned and operated family establishment. Silver City Brewery's handcrafted beers are available around Washington.
Where did your name come from?
For most in the Puget Sound, when you look west at the Olympic Mountains you're looking right at the "Silver City." It’s the convergence point that rests between the city life of Seattle and the wild adventure of the Olympic National Forest and the Pacific Ocean beyond. The Silver City we call home is a place where beer brings people together to celebrate having it all.
We’ve heard you’re very active in beer competitions.
Our beers have medaled at the Washington State Beer Awards, the North American Beer Awards, the World Beer Cup and the Great American Beer Festival. In fact, we’ve won more than 40 medals to date for our beer.
We were also chosen as the official beer of 2015 Seattle Beer Week – the first non-Seattle based brewery ever chosen. Our Sieben Brau Helles Lager was created just for the occasion.
That’s quite a haul! Is there a beer that you’re proudest of?
Saint Florian, the patron saint of firefighters, is the namesake of one of our IPAs, the sales of which help to raise money for Washington State Council of Fire Fighters Benevolent Funds. Part of the proceeds from each bottle and keg of Saint Florian IPA sold goes directly to the Benevolent Fund.
Thanks for talking with us, and best of luck in your next competition!
Look for Silver City beers in-store, including their Ziggy Zoggy Summer Lager, coming in April.
