Q&A: Snoqualmie Ice Cream • Snohomish, WA

Tucked away in Snohomish is an ice cream company you’ve probably heard about. Snoqualmie’s all-natural ice cream, gelato and more have loyal fans in Washington and beyond. We caught up with them to get the scoop ... which really made us want to have a scoop!

Who are the people behind Snoqualmie Ice Cream?

Barry and Shahnaz Bettinger purchased Snoqualmie Ice Cream in 1997, because as a married couple, they always wanted to work together. Barry was raised on a farm and managed large dairy plants, which was perfect experience for Snoqualmie. Since then, Snoqualmie has grown into 11 states without ever compromising quality and remaining privately owned.

At Snoqualmie Ice Cream, we’re proud to make the most perfect, all-natural ice cream, custard, gelato and sorbet. Everything we make is handcrafted in small batches at our sustainable factory in Snohomish, Washington.

What makes your ice cream so tasty?

We believe in simple ingredients. We work with family farms in the Pacific Northwest to source milk and cream that doesn’t contain added hormones. We sweeten with non-GMO cane sugar and never use preservatives, high-fructose corn syrup or artificial flavors. Our ice cream is vat pasteurized, because it slow cooks the ingredients, never scorches the cream and allows each flavor to have its own unique recipe. And we have the highest butterfat content on the market (that we know of)!

It seems like people can’t get enough of your ice cream!

It’s true! Huffington Post has named us one of the top ice creams in the nation for three years running (2013, 2014 and 2015), and The Today Show named our Almond Poppy Seed Custard one of the best new ice cream flavors of 2015.

How do you make great ice cream while still focusing on sustainability?

We have zero runoff from our site, because of our installation of rain gardens, pervious concrete and rainwater collection for irrigation. We’ve cut our utility bill in half, because we use solar panels, compressor waste heat recovery, LED sensor lighting and the most energy-e¬fficient equipment possible.

We do what we do because it’s a part of who we are, and we have a responsibility to our community and environment. When you decide to go sustainable, it’s a never-ending journey, which is why we’re always upgrading and innovating.
