Make this the night before for a sweet Valentine’s Day breakfast – creamy cherry filled French toast topped with almonds.


  • 8 oz. cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup frozen sweet cherries, thawed, drained and chopped
  • 2 Tbsp. powdered sugar, plus more for dusting
  • ½ tsp. almond extract
  • 1 loaf (16 oz.) French or Italian bread, sliced
  • 2 ½ cups half and half
  • 5 eggs
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • ½ tsp. almond extract
  • ½ cup sliced almonds


  1. Butter or spray a 9”x13” casserole dish; set aside.
  2. Combine cream cheese, cherries, powdered sugar and 1 teaspoon almond extract. Spread the top of all except two slices of the bread with about ½ tablespoon of cream cheese mixture. Place slices of bread in two rows in prepared pan ending with plain slices.
  3. In a large bowl whisk together half and half, eggs, sugar, vanilla and almond extract. Pour over bread in the pan. Top with sliced almonds. Cover with plastic food wrap; refrigerate 6 hours or overnight.
  4. Heat oven to 350°F.
  5. Bake 35-40 minutes until golden brown and set. Let stand 5-10 minutes before serving. Dust with powdered sugar if desired.
